Glenville Parent Post | September 15

Welcome to week 5 of our school year! In this week's Glenville Parent Post, you can find:

Principal's Note

One month into the school year, and I couldn’t be prouder of how our Glenville families have shown up - especially in making sure your child attends school every day!

Right now, our average daily attendance is 92.9% -- the highest in the network and up 3% from this time last year. That’s because of you. When families make daily attendance a priority and stay in close communication with us, kids win. Missing even just one day of school each month adds up to nearly two full weeks of lost learning by the end of the year. Those days matter -- every lesson, every discussion, every chance to grow.

Our young people deserve the best, and with your partnership, we intend to give it to them.

-- Principal Imlay

If you and your child are facing barriers impacting their attendance, please contact our main office so we can partner with you -- we are here to support in getting your child here, every day. Contact us: 216-367-9392

Virtue of the Month

Big Heart (Compassion)

At Glenville, our first virtues of the year falls under the Big Heart badge - showing Respect and Compassion for others. In September, we are focusing on Compassion: noticing when others are struggling, showing care, and taking action to help. Compassion is what makes our school feel like a true Village where everyone belongs.

💬 Family Conversation Starter - Ask your child:

  • “Can you tell me about a time this week when you showed compassion for someone—or when someone showed compassion for you?”

  • “Who was kind to you at school this week? How did it make you feel? Did you do something kind for a friend?”

Every month, 1 student from every homeroom is selected as our "Virtue Champion" for exemplifying the core components of that month's virtue in their daily actions. Our first champions will be announced on Monday 9/15 - check out our Facebook page to see this month's winners!

Important Dates

September 15-26

Here are our events for the week:

  • Monday 9/15 - Wacky Tacky Day - scholars are encouraged to wear their wackiest, silliest outfits (school appropriate)!

  • Harvest Mum Buddies Fundraiser is going on now! Sales end on 9/22 and pickup is on 10/11 between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM. You can see the fundraiser flyer here.

Tip of the Week

Daily Reading & Homework Routine

No matter which grade your scholar is in, they should expect to have homework each night. Homework helps a scholar retain and expand on the learning that started in the classroom each day.

  • Tip 1: Find and set up a specific "Reading/Homework" spot in your home. It can be helpful to have a specific spot for your scholar to work on their homework and read each night.

  • Tip 2: Build a Routine. Work with your scholar to have them go to that spot at the same time every day. Even if it's just for 5 minutes for the first week -- getting them used to going to that spot and doing a little homework or reading every day will help build positive study habits as they get older.

Policy Reminders: Arrival, Dismissal + Uniforms

  • Students are dismissed for the day by 2:50 PM, and *early dismissal ends at 2:15 PM.

McKinney Vento - Homeless and Unaccompanied Youth

Homeless children and youth, as well as unaccompanied youth, are eligible for specific support within a school district under the McKinney Vento Act.

  • “Homeless children and youth” means children and youth who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence, including those who are sharing the housing of others due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason; staying in motels, trailer parks, or camp grounds due to the lack of an adequate alternative; staying in shelters or transitional housing; or sleeping in cars, parks, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, or similar settings

  • “Unaccompanied youth” includes homeless children and youth who are not in the physical custody of a parent or guardian

If your scholar meets this criteria, please reach out to Glenville or complete the social worker contact form for more assistance.

As a reminder, you can contact our Glenville front office by calling 216-367-9392. You can also reach our assistant principles and deans of culture with their listed emails here.

Important Note on Attendance: Time away from the classroom can start to add up quickly. A scholar is truant if the scholar is absent for 72 total hours of unexcused time (or about 11 school days) or more in one school year. Under Ohio state law, we are required to refer families whose scholars are habitually truant to the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court. You can avoid this by ensuring your scholar is at school on time, every day, and stays the whole day! Please contact us immediately if you are concerned about your child's attendance. We want them here, so we want to partner with you to connect you with supports early to prevent chronic absenteeism.
